Velvet keeps coming back when the weather cools and the invitations start to arrive, and this season it is showing up in deep, rich colors. Here is how I style one velvet dress three different ways, from Kalent Zaiz Signature, so you can see how much a single piece can do.
Why Velvet, and Why Now
When I read what style editors are talking about for party season, the same words keep appearing: velvet, deep jewel tones and a little shine. I do not dress by headlines, but I do pay attention, because fabric says something before you say a word. Velvet says you took your time. It catches the light, it moves softly, and it makes even a simple shape look considered. It also works hard for you: the same dress can go from a morning conference to an evening dinner to a Monday at the office, and that is exactly what I want from the clothes I design.
That is the idea behind Kalent Zaiz Signature: pieces you do not have to keep deciding about, because they already feel like you. "If You Got It, You Deserve It!!!"™
The Dress: Lilac Velvet, Turtleneck, Sleeveless
The piece I am styling today is the Kalent Zaiz Lilac Velvet turtle sleeveless dress. It is a sleeveless sheath with a turtleneck, a back zip and a soft stretch blend made for all-day comfort, and the product page notes that it fits true to size. I love it because the neckline does half of the work: it frames your face, so you need very little jewelry.
Look One: A Casual Conference
Daytime events ask for polish without stiffness. Wear the dress with a fancy orange jacket over your shoulders or open in front. Orange and lilac are a bold pair, and the jacket makes the outfit feel like a choice, not a uniform. Keep your jewelry small and your shoes comfortable enough for a full day of walking and talking. If the room gets warm, take the jacket off and the dress still stands on its own. If it gets cold, you are already covered. Either way you look finished, and that is the whole point of a good layer.
Look Two: The Hotel Lobby
For an evening meeting, a dinner or a hotel event, add a black or blue velvet jacket. Velvet on velvet is rich and quiet at the same time, and you can play with texture while the lilac stays the center of attention. Wear it with classic black high heels and soft lips, and let the fabric do the talking.
Look Three: The Velvet Rose at the Desk
This is my favorite for the office. Take a medium velvet rose, one made from real velvet, and place it close to your neck, at the collar of the dress. It is a small detail that makes a simple look feel designed. Then sit on the corner of a beautiful desk in a calm, sophisticated space, and let the color and the flower work together. I like to place the rose a little off center, on the side where you naturally turn your head, so it catches the light when you talk. Check that it stays flat when you sit down, and wear it the way you would wear a good piece of jewelry: with confidence and without fuss.
Three Rules for Wearing Velvet
- Let one shade lead. If the dress is the color, keep your accessories quiet.
- Look at it in two kinds of light. Velvet changes color between daylight and evening light, so check it in both before you decide.
- Comfort comes first. If you cannot sit down, laugh and dance in it, it is not the one.
